Old maternity dress - re-purposed into MAXI Skirt!
So I had this old dress that I wore when I was preggers. It actually wasn't maternity but it was a maxi dress a size bigger and it was really comfy while I was all whale like. Now that I have lost the baby weight the dress was too big so I figured why not re-purpose it?! I got the idea from yet another PIN!
So here is the old dress...it wasn't bad just too big and I wore this a lot while preggers so the white was starting to get dingy. First step I took was cutting the top part (the white and gray) right off and saving the skirt part of the dress. I kept the seam so that I wouldn't have to serge the edge. I don't have a serger BTW so I just use the zig zag stitch.

Below is the zig zag stitch I used to serge the edges of the elastic. In order to cut the elastic to the proper length, measure around your waist where you want the skirt to fall. For me it was high up on the smaller part of my waist. Then cut the elastic at least 1 inch (I suggest 2 inches) smaller than your waist size. You want it snug enough.

I got my elastic at JoAnn's (LOVE that place) and I got the 2.5 inch (I think?). The 3 inch which I would have preferred was sold out ... I bought 2 yards which is enough for 2 skirts with some left over.
Now I will direct you to a full how-to on the sewing the elastic to the skirt part. Click here for a fantastic tutorial.

I would love to see some of your projects! Feel free to post pics or links to your new skirts!
Well aren't you becoming quite the little Martha Stewart! (I don't know if she actually uses Pinterest or remakes her dresses...but she was the best name I could think of! haha) :)
